It’s Women’s History Month!

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th, but this month is also known as “Women’s History Month”! As I was looking up books, quotes, and videos to incorporate into lessons, I realized I don’t remember learning about many of these women as a student. We learned about a handful of women in history, art, religion, and language arts that I think many of us grew up learning about (Rosa Parks, Blessed Mother Mary, Frida Kahlo, Anne Frank are the ladies that stand out the most)…but there are so many more. I’ve really enjoyed learning alongside our students while also sharing some of my favorite women in history, literature, and movies.

Rosie the Riveter, although technically a fictional character, is one of my favorite representations of what it means to be a woman. Rosie represents women during WWII who stepped up to the plate when many men were off to war. There was a need for smart and capable minds to support America on the home front, and women across the country did just that. This was definitely a turning point for women in American history.

Learn more about Rosie’s history in the video below:

Looking for a book with fantastic females?
Below are just a handful of historical and fictional leading ladies. Most of the books below were written by talented women!

Inspirational women are in our history, our homes, & in the books and movies we enjoy. Below you’ll find quotes from inspiring women and female characters!
I’ve paired them with either a video that I hope gets you reading and inspires you.

“For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others;
For beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness;
And for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.”

~ Audrey Hepburn was a popular actress and a humanitarian

“I believe that we have to come together, and we have to rely on the goodness of each other.”
~ Ruby Bridges

“Hope is like the sun. If you only believe it when you see it you’ll never make it through the night.”
~ General Organa (Princess Leia)
Star Wars Episode VIII The Last Jedi

I love this story read by the voice of Mulan, Ming-Na Wen!
“How ’bout a girl who’s got a brain who always speaks her mind?”
~ Mulan

There are so many wonderful female characters in the Harry Potter series.
“I’m hoping to do some good in the world.”
~ Hermione Granger Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

“Now I know, that only love can truly save the world. So I stay, I fight, and I give, for the world I know can be.”
~ Diana, Wonder Woman

“When the world turns upside down, the best thing to do is turn right along with it.”
~ Mary Poppins

“Decisions were a delight after the curse. I loved having the power to say yes or no, and refusing anything was a special pleasure.” ~ Ella, Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine

Given the “gift” of obedience, Ella has to find a way to break the curse bestowed upon her. I loved this book as a young girl, and the movie is a lot of fun!

To finish off this post, I’m sharing a Disney video I really enjoy. Like many children, I grew up watching Disney princesses movies. As I’ve gotten older, I love seeing the new movies with the princesses that are also strong characters. From these fictional ladies I learned to never give up, to hope, to dream, and to fight for what’s important to me. Dream BIG, my friends!

“The only way to get what you want in this world is through hard work.”
~ Tiana, Princess and the Frog
