Cambodia is the Country of the Month!

The country of the month for May and June is Cambodia. This country is located in Southeast Asia and it’s capital is Phnom Penh. Cambodia’s climate is very tropical with about half of it covered in tropical forests. The rainy season is between May and October. Because it often floods the houses in Cambodia are built on stilts. There are almost 11 million people living in Cambodia most of which are farmers. These people are known as Khmer. They grow a variety of foods but rice is their main crop. Because of this rice is also the most common food that Cambodians eat. Usually the eat rice with different vegetables and sometimes they also have fish or meat.

The Khmer people celebrate many festivals but the largest is known as Bon Om Tuk. This is the water festival and it begins at the end of the rainy season. There is also the Khmer New Year known as Chaul Chnam. This is celebrated in April. Most people in Cambodia practice Buddhism. The main belief in Buddhism is to obtain enlightenment by understanding your place in life. Because biggest religion in Cambodia is Buddhism there are statues of Buddha sprinkled around the country as well as many Buddhist temples. The most well known Buddhist temple is called the Angkor Wat. This temple was built during the 1200’s and is now overgrown with plants and wildlife. It is one of the largest and most beautiful Buddhist temples in the world. Some Cambodians and Buddhist Monks still go to pray at the temple.
